thanks @beams i have printed the tpu shim and now the Trackball is so much better to use. I used to have to press and roll to move the mouse. Now it moves super easily and smoothly and no longer stops because there isn’t enough pressure.
Thank you very much for sharing, this works for me. It’s nice to not have to worry about plugging in multiple USB devices anymore.
Thank you for confirming this. I have also made a release today that fixed the backlight flickering issue with QMK firmware. The default frequency & period needs override to resolve the backlight flickering.
Your new backlight driver works great! It’s really nice to have the keyboard backlight fully functional. This new update is the best keyboard firmware I’ve used so far.
I just implemented the Precision Cursor Mode that @beams proposed here (PR here) and I gotta say: Thank you, this is a game changer!
Awesome! I will test it and release it later today. Thank you ![]()
It’s released and latest build is here. I have also been busy working on the keyboard diffuser improvement, it will improve keypress & backlight balance. Take look here hope this might be interesting for some.
I printed the new diffusor and shim in TPU and now the uConsole’s keyboard finally feels like something you wanna actually use. Much less fatigue while typing and I am faster, too.
Is there somewhere online we can buy the diffusor ?
yes. you can buy the 3d model here, contact detail is on the page if you would like it pre-made & shipped…
Done. Please sandwich between two pieces of stiff card as last post was mangled in our letterbox !
I went ahead and ordered a couple diffusers. i also have a couple trackballs I bought from Amazon. Have folks swapped out and had a better experience? I’m trying to get rid of the jitter at the edges.
Watch out for the trackball diffuser/spacer, easily lost !! (used to pad the top of the trackball if slightly loose)
Been trying it for 5minutes now. Pressing lALT rALT Start. No success.
Problem is the start and select button are not recognized while using the keyboard tester.
gamepad buttons are not recognized by keyboard tester.
try online gamepad test to test gamepad
Need to switch to the game mode first, with Fn+G to toggle
I ordered your diffuser. I encourage you to make a new thread for your hardware mods to the keyboard and trackball, as they are very useful and informative, both to QMK and stock users.
My diffuser came in two layers, but I only ordered one. Was the second one included by mistake, or are they meant to be used in tandem? I’m using one layer right now.
I wrote this a bit ago:
The difference in light has been documented on-line but in person it really is night and day, and made me realize just how worn my keyboard silicone is!
When the light was so muted it didn’t shine through the same way. Of course the light dispersion is much, much better than stock’s, as intended and as shown in the same pictures.
My uConsole keyboard has been used quite a bit. My roommate has a seldom-used console and in comparison my keypresses are much louder and my keyboard is much mushier. This diffuser brings both those qualities back towards stock; as you intended, the keys need less pressure, and are much quieter. It makes my device feel much more premium.
I have noticed two problems of which I think you should be informed. The first is that, on the keyboard, the domes are held in place by thermal masking (Kapton) tape that loses its adhesion over time. My right Alt key had that happen with the stock diffuser, and now your diffuser happened to push left Ctrl off as well. This is a very easy fix; remove the tape from the metal dome and replace it with new Kapton tape, which I successfully did for the second time yesterday. Ideally use a good-length strip as thin as the button itself, then flatten it against both sides of the button and the board so as to give the adhesive extra surface area for contact. The shinier side of the metal dome faces up. This isn’t the fault of the diffuser but just a natural symptom of age, and I can send pictures if anyone’s curious.
The second problem is that my diffuser’s affect on my typing pressure is inconsistent. I think it might be moving underneath the membrane; when I take it apart to check everything looks fine, but then when I put it back together like that the problem goes away. Select remains noticeably loud and mushy, also some other keys in its vicinity like ‘2’, ‘e’ (especially), ‘s’, ‘x’, and the modifiers, but the right side of the keyboard is still quiet. It’s all still fine and I have no desire to return the membrane.
All in all, thank you very much for this product! I look forward to trying your mod using a glass bead as the trackball next.
I really appreciate the input. You hit the nail on the head regarding keyboard conditions. I includes two was my way of ‘future-proofing’ the experience for early customers!
I also have a much bigger project in the works. I’m finishing up production testing and adding a few more modules as we speak. I’ve been having a blast building it, but I’m keeping the specifics a secret until the documentation is 100% ready. Can’t wait to show you all!
