Anyone still using the R-01?

I have a R-01 uConsole which I upgraded to a CM3 for the better computing & graphics power. However, I am tempted to go back to the R-01 and see if there is any way to make it feel faster - in theory the CPU is plenty fast for basic tasks, but I think the high resolution display is really holding it back.

Sounds interesting to anyone?

I mean, you could try, but it’ll be a challenge. The R-01 is an experimental board: RISC-V architecture, single core, no GPU and a paltry 1GB of DDR3 memory. Each of these factors presents a challenge individually let alone altogether.

I am aware! The core does seem quite slow, especially due to the lack of GPU. Not too worried about the memory though - the CM3 I’m using has 1GB of DDR2 and that’s plenty for what I’m using it for!

However, I believe there are gains to be had in order to make the core more useful.

I see what you mean. How were you using your R-01 before upgrading to CM3?

Basic console / SSH jobs… As well as light web browsing with the built-in QT browser - but that doesn’t work very well as it’s not capable of running JavaScript - pretty much a requirement for the modern web.

I updated to the CM3 pretty much as soon as I got my device, so I don’t have that much time on the platform. However the insane battery life (I got like 8 or 10 hours of idle time?) is very attractive.

My work pretty much requires a browser with JavaScript. But getting that working on the R-01 seems very difficult.
