Adding gps capacity

Hi. I bought a second hand uconsole, without the extension board. Now, I would like to have at least a gps inside. But don’t want to spend 100 bucks in that. Do you have an advice ? Thanks

4g module would be handy.

I don’t think anyone has designed an expansion board with only GPS. But there’s a discussion thread here that indicates there are some boards with LoRa and GPS:

As far as I know, Clockwork doesn’t sell the 4G expansion board separately anyway, although you could contact alex@clockworkpi.com and ask.

I’m not familiar with USB GPS options, but that may be a possibility too. With something like this expansion card, and maybe an adaptor, you may be able to find a small enough USB GPS unit and put it inside the uConsole case. Plus you’d gain three external USB ports. While I haven’t used it with GPS, I own one of these expansion boards and it works well.

I have one of these gps units wired to the internal usb. It works perfectly as a support when you place the uConsole on a desk too. Stops it wobbling when you type.
The switch on the back turns on or off the power to both the gps and the sdr unit inside, so it’s not using power when not in use. Also so the sdr isn’t working when I have no antenna attached which won’t do it any good long term. Fitted a tiny blue LED on the side which lights when the sdr & gps are powered on.
The switch placement was determined largely by internal space availability but actually ended up being perfect. In just the right place to switch with my forefinger but not in the way when I’m holding the unit and won’t get toggled accidentally.

Although the gps is working and streams satellite data I’ve not made use of it so far. Not sure what I’ll do with it yet. A future project.

With the uConsole being metal I do think gps needs to be external really or you’ll probably not have a great signal.

The satellite signal on this is great. Even though it’s facing down when you’re holding the uConsole.
