Bookworm 6.6.y for the uConsole and DevTerm

do you a emmc or non-emmc cm5?

No EMMC CM5, only SD

Yay! that’s great to hear!

I’ve been seeing people with problems on the lite version for booting off the sd. Maybe there’s more going on with it, I’m not having any shutdown problems with normal use. Only problems I’ve had was when I was reprogramming drivers.

UPDATE: CM5 Audio Now Available! Check out the OP!

Thank you for your efforts Rex, so just need to update the config file to enable the audio?

Thanks for all the hard work Rex. really great contribution. I just got a chance to test your audio dtoverlay and it is working well. It does require that the user update to Kernel 6.6.77 if starting with the img you have posted.

I was not previously able to get the img in the OP to reboot or shutdown cleanly. The only way to shut down the system is to remove power. I am using the CM5108000 (CM5 8Gb lite) and booting from the SD card.

After updating to Kernel 6.6.77 the system now shuts down cleanly and can be restarted with the power button as expected.

Rebooting through the UI or the terminal is still broken.
(edit: if I reboot the device with HDMI hooked up I can see that it is failing to open device: nvme for some reason. only on reboots. works fine if I power off and start fresh. Seems like the SD card is not detected by the bootloader after a reboot)

Let me know if there is any helpful logs I can provide for this hardware configuration.

Thanks again.

You are correct. I did a fresh install from the OP img file. Then I updated the config.txt file, and then updated the Kernel through the desktop UI. After rebooting audio was working fine (at least for the one YouTube video I tried as a quick test). It won’t work unless you update the Kernel.

A bit new to a lot of this, would you be able to point to a guide for updating the kernel?

oh yeah you can just do it right through the desktop UI. If you are connected to the internet after a few minutes you should see an icon button in the lower right of the screen. If you click it you will get a prompt to allow the system to update. that will include the Kernel update.

Thank you for the advice.

And thanks again Rex, audio working. Will look into the improved panel driver!

Here is my bootloader version. curious if other people are having the same issue with the CM5Lite (non-eMMC)

james@clockworkpi:~ $ vcgencmd bootloader_version
2024/09/23 14:02:56
version 2682625908f5585e5f4832bb82e74e7d757ec48f (release)
timestamp 1727096576
update-time 0
capabilities 0x0000007f

The CM5 works perfectly fine, it’s only the screen that has issues. And on normal shutdowns there also is no issue, only when the CM5 crashes due to low battery. Then the screen goes into an unrecoverable state and can only be reset by removing all power.

In that state the screen always has the backlight on and a black acreen. And no matter how often the CM5 is rebooted it won’t change. The CM5 still boots normally when that happens and can be turned on and off. With a CM4 the screen would just turn off and work normally on next boot.

Tobias, are you using an SD card or the eMMC?

James: SD Card.
Here’s the description of the issue I have with the screen when the battery runs out. It’s different from SD card issues, and also different from the normal screen issues on boot: Bookworm 6.6.y for the uConsole and DevTerm - #784 by TobiasLeininger

I’ve also tested the audio now, seems to work just fine! That’s great!

Also added the screen backlight service, will report if that’s the solution to making it work more consistently.

Amazing work, Rex. Your efforts are very much appreciated!

EDIT: Removed a question because I wasn’t reading properly. Thanks again!

@DangerJames Do you have pcie disabled? If not add this to your config.txt in the [pi5] section dtparam=pciex1=off Let me know if you already had it or if you didn’t did that make a difference?

@TobiasLeininger I’ve been looking into it but haven’t found anything yet. We are running a CM two generations newer then what the board was designed for I’m not surprised we are getting some pains from it. What we need is a new main board.

Just think, a short nvme drive in a new uconsole for boot. They already have trouble keeping up with orders, that would push a lot of people to upgrade. An X jack for gigabit would be nice too.
