Introducing the DevTerm Field Ops Shell

fine, do something better…

There will always be doers, and those who complain about them, haha!

I prefer the wired interface - I have an android aprsdroid connected to the Yeasue USB port working - so it’s just a matter of building a cable with the DB9 connected properly - last cable I built did not have continuity for all leads so it’s most likely a cable (or the audio plug side) issue (where most issues with APRS lie) but the bluetooth aprs tnc doesn’t hold the port (in android) maybe it will be more stable under linux… My most successful APRS modem has been the TNC-x which are sold now through MFJ but no longer as kits…

Preference is wifi/udp interface over Bluetooth or hardwired .

Looks like an interesting design, and I can see the advantage of adding a mounting rail. The only thing I can suggest is a version that will put a lens over the screen as that is quite vulnerable, and something that was usually more protected on the machines of old that inspired the devterm. I might make a remix that has this if OP is OK with folks iterating on the design.

since it’s 16x9 aspect the most convenient sources would be a modified gorilla glass screen protector for a tablet (Samsung galaxy tablet screen protector is large enough - how’s your glass cutting skills? probably doable… same might be done for the upcoming uConsole - I’ve not experianced any scratches on mine or screen damage but I’ve been careful with it since the case itself is made out of model plastic. A suggestion to print the ring out of TPU rather than ABS would make it more shock absorbent. (greatest fear I have is to drop the unit and it land on a corner and shatter the factory case. Hard to appreciate things till you try to build things yourself.

I’d love to do this if we can source an off the shelf material that doesn’t require any modification, it’s more of a quality assurance thing than anything else.

I was just gonna use regular sheet acrylic and just accept it will need replacing periodically. Better that than the whole screen

since it’s not a touch screen any clear protector would work - how will you attach the sheet acrylic - also I’ve had issues cutting plastic - what tools do you use? - I’ve used the scribe and break method but with limited success - tried the Dremel tools as well… best method ive used (tedious ) is a hot hobby knife I have power a miter saw but the blade is a bit coarse for cutting thin plastic - I’ve heard to reverse the blade but would like to hear from you and the others on this link about best cutting methods. then there is the sewing thread method!

For the thin stuff I just score it with a Stanley knife a few times and just snap it. Thicker stuff is a job for a junior hacksaw. I’ve had some projects where I needed something special so I commissioned someone with a laser cutter and made files in LibreCAD to get that cut. I last did this to make someone an arcade stick with keyboard keys in it cos that’s what they learned on and wanted something they could take to tournaments

Well there are instructions on how to modify a screen protector…

Very cool project. I made a complex plastic cage to support the sdr with a right angle usb adapter. But I’m going to place the sdr inside the devterm.

Cutting tempered glass - They say exceptionally difficult - (nearly impossible??) Guide illustration shows it being cut underwater to keep shards from flying in all directions - polycarbonate or plexiglass is a much easier material to work with but there are sources that make custom screen protector glass in small batches $$$

what application are you guys all thinking of with mounting SDRs on your DevTerms?

It is like bird watching, but with different radio signals. In some cases there is something to decode: satellites, weather balloon, plane traffic etc.

Ive used my SDR for detecting and troubleshooting sources of radio interference… (solar on/ solar off etc.)

crazy!!! I remember reading about the military and security agencies having a panic about remotely viewing screens… short range only?

I’ve used it to listen to aircraft with, although that needed a big dipole that would be impractical to have sticking out of the devterm,

Depends on the transmission power and how leaky is the system

Need to dress up the area around the printer but. It’s good to go.
