I’m in the same boat as you using my uconsole as my daily driver. I went from just a phone to building out a pi5 as a desktop/luggable and the uConsole as my primary.
Getting nixos running on the cm5. There is a flake file that I found, but it needed to be customized with the hacker gadgets upgrade. I built the system on my main nixos server and manage the uconsole from that.
claude helped with the full system build, and system services setup for my use case. There was also a lot of troubleshooting to get the uconsole fully setup for my specific system.
I use claude for all of my server setups.
Ok. That’s more than I expected but also pretty far off the track for some one looking for a starter guide.
My original post was simply suggesting to use claude to help. You asked what I used claude for specifically, so I gave you an answer. Read my first post and it fits perfectly in this thread.
Claude can answer any question about all the options for setting up a uconsole, and can make suggestions for the users use case.
Thanks for your input though…
My guy. Unless you’re doing something like what you’re doing there is no need to “use Claude” for setting up the uConsole. It’s not plug n play but pretty close and has such a good community of real people that you can learn from.
Telling someone looking for starting advice to use an llm is a waste of everyone’s time and actively gets in the way of people learning.
You’re hilarious man! I really appreciate a good laugh from trolls online.
Claude is not a waste of time, and much faster than waiting for someone to reply on a forum.
best of luck man.. keep picking fights for no reason on forums! ![]()
Very funny.
But for real I understand why someone like you finds an llm useful for running your set up. What the OP was asking for was not that. By defaulting to “ask claude” you shut down conversation and also don’t leave any meaningful information behind for the next person.
I’m not a power user like you apparently are. Any questions I’ve had I’ve been able to answer by using the search bar here or on Reddit plus reading manpages. It’s all available, for free. Other people have done great work in this thread putting OP onto information they needed and found digestible. This is actually what makes a strong community and a strong community is what makes the uConsole relevant and viable.
And let’s not forget that LLMs only have their knowledge because humans have written it down.
and they’re not good at admitting they don’t know something
If the goal is to do something without knowing how to do it, a program running on someone else’s computer is a decent option for achieving it. If the goal is to learn how to do something, relying on a program you neither have the ability to acquire nor own is a bad option. Beginners who use LLMs as crutches tend to be incompetent once those LLMs are removed; ironically, the places where competency is most important, like fixing broken hardware or software, tend to be the places where LLMs are least available, such as when Internet is down or the keyboard doesn’t work.
I would never advise someone to choose convenience over self reliance.
And, as others have said, LLMs can answer your questions because we on this and other forums answered them already. Often it is acting as an expensive, personal search engine.
I agree on this about installing programs yourself as a way to learn. I did install the trixie image but I’m going to be trying and testing the apps included on it and then installing a lot of my own options. Once I have done that I will pop out that SD card and do it again with a different starting point and OS. Then once I have used both I will decide which to put on the NVME drive and stick with it.
That’s what I did as well, tried a few distros and configurations to see what I liked/needed/could live without.
Do you have any particular focus for what you want out of it?
