Hi there, newbie here, just installing my first version of linux in any system.
Going for the bookworm on the uconsole, by reading the community it seams the one more suitable for the casual user to begin to get confortable with it.
Friends of mine are also sugesting trying distros Like Mint or Nitrux, but i dont see many people talking about other distros.
Is there any reason why? if so what would that reason be?
Once again sorry if something passed by during the read i did on most topics.
The uConsole needs drivers specific to the unit that are not in normal Linux distros. So for a Linux distro to work someone needs to configure it with the drivers, that’s why there is only a handful of distros available for the uConsole.
Thank you very much @Rex !!!
Starting off with the uConsole images from ClockworkPi is going to be the most well tread path. Getting Debian Bookwork or PostmarketOS on there is easy if you follow the instructions. It doesn’t hurt to have two or more microSD cards if you want to try out a lot of things. You can keep one as your “main” everyday use. And one for experimenting with different distros until you find something you like.
Getting a random unsupported distro to work on uConsole takes some effort, I’ve only done it for DevTerm but the effort for uConsole is similar. I would consider turning a distro into something that runs on uConsole/uTerm as an advanced topic. Although a LOT of distros that support Raspberry Pi will boot to HDMI output only on the uConsole (w/ CM4 module), so it’s something anyone can attempt if they have some persistence.
Is there something you found unsatisfactory with the out-of-box experience with your uConsole? I think any new OS is going to have a bit of a learning curve. I know I struggled with Windows 95/98 when it first came out, and ran screaming back to Unix/Linux.
most of popular distros basically the same.
main difference is package manager and format of “packages”/software.
But I sometime download *deb packages, unpack them and run on my non-debian system.
so in the end it’s more like coke/pepsi situation.
Just running it, getting flatpack to run and after that the flat hub
So far no problems, liking it very much
Running on a 1tb SD is smooth, and will do some other distros in other SD, especially kali
