I know this has already been rehashed in other forums, but I wanted to reach out and consolidate current opinions on what CM5 module to buy. I originally had the A06, but I’m finding it’s difficult to update. The CM5 makes so much more sense.
What variants of the CM5 do people recommend? I’m looking at the CM5 list from pishop and they have a large list of variants. I tend to go for the “biggest and best”, but I also want to avoid a mistake as the CM5 module means I can just use it “as another pi” since it would need a carrier card.
Questions:
Do you recommend SD card or EMMC? I assume EMMC is faster, but requires flashing the OS.
Do you recommend built-in wifi or using the uConsole’s carrier card’s wifi?
Do you recommend going past 8GB of RAM? I love the 16GB option, but I’m unsure about heat.
A previous post mentioned the Radxa CM5 module. If folks have experience with that, I’ll link in that chat.
Hello, I bought the uConsole with no core and planned to put in a CM5, so I need to buy the adapter board separately and it has to be from clockworkpi? I thought I get it with the uConsole even tho I select no core version.
Gonna message them to include that into my order if thats the case.
if you bought cm4 no core – you should have an adapter.
if you bought A04/A06 (nowadays if you buy an old used uconsole as A06 basically dead now) – you have to buy an adapter if you want to switch/upgrade to cm4/cm5
With no EMMC, you can just replace the SD card to run a totally different OS. If you have EMMC, you have to flash it with external software and it puts wear and tear on the chip. Also, the EMMC uses a lot of power and generates a lot of heat. I can’t power my 64GB EMMC unit with a standard RP5 power supply. I can power the 0MB EMMC unit with a standard supply and it runs much cooler. No EMMC is the way to go.
Can confirm. CM5 emmc version boots super fast. I got the 64GB WiFi one because I’m using it with the SDR expansion board and won’t be changing OS very often (or at all)
