Rockolixi Super Ultra Premium OS (not really an OS)

!!!

THIS POST IS A PARODY AND SHOULD NOT BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY.

Rockolixi Super Ultra Premium OS
R-SUP OS: The operating System for Pirates

Hey guys, I’m working on my own OS and as you can see by the title, it’s going to be super ultra premium (SUP). You’ll need to buy a new board to replace your pico.

I need people to write apps for it. I don’t have an API yet and I’m still wrapping my head around how to write a kernel (or what it is and actually does) for a chip with no documentation but I should be done in practically no time (probably 2-3 weeks).

Since I plan for people to abandon their primary computer and OS and use mine exclusively I’ll need some apps to run on it. Here are some apps I need people to write/port to my OS. Please pick one and go ahead and get started on it ASAP.

  1. Tetris
  2. Minesweeper
  3. Solitaire
  4. GIMP
  5. Chrome
  6. Libre Office
  7. Minecraft
  8. Doom
  9. Calculator
  10. Sega Saturn Emulator

Some of these need more RAM than available so you’ll have to get creative. Since you will have access to the SD card you could use some sort of swap/virtual RAM to make up the difference between the RAM available on the Luckfox Lyra (112MB available after the 16MB allocated for rSUP) and the multiple gigabytes needed by apps like Chrome.

Here’s the current memory map to get you started:

Obviously you guys are super excited by now! And who can blame you? This is what everyone has been dreaming of since they first got their PicoCalc!

I can’t wait to read your comments and suggestions and then promptly ignore them when they don’t say what I want to hear!

Will I finally be able to play Crysis in the PicoCalc?

The whole topic and its roots leads many people to a personal crysis. :winking_face_with_tongue:

@rockotiger should start to make plans how the license scheme will look like. I can imagine that many companies would love to register their volume-licenses in advance. So he could pay the development costs with the licence fees he charges beforehand.

I just realise I’m a genius. Maybe I should start working on my own super, hyper, ultra…

NEW DEVLOG!!!1!1

Also I’ve made a mockup of how the GUI will look. I’ve spent a lot of time designing it from scratch and think it’s super sleek and modern. Since you’ll all be using nothing but Rockolixi SUP OS soon I wanted to give you a preview and get some feedback.

Yes, check the GUI mockup.

I’m currently working with ChatGPT on a licensing agreement that lets me do whatever I want and disregards the needs and concerns of my users.

Your GUI design is overwhelming!

I currently use Firefox and usually have 30 to 40 tabs open at the same time. In oder to replace my PC, this has to work on the PicoCalc, too. Do you see any problems with that?

Fortnite or GTA6 would be great. …btw, your GUI looks great

It seems like an excellent project.

Will it be possible to run virtual machines? I’d love to have Linux, Windows, and other operating systems virtualized inside Rockolixi Super Ultra Premium OS.

This will be no problem at all though there will probably be a cap at 50 tabs. I’ve read comments in other threads from people who doubt that the Luckfox Lyra can handle a real web browser, but they’re just wrong and I know it. One of my many app writers will figure something out.

I asked Grok if it could help me get these done and it very confidently told me it can so this should be pack-in titles with the first release.

Yes. In fact virtualization will be built into RSUPOS as well as an x86/amd64 emulation layer so that it can be used to run Windows apps as if they are native apps. Linux support is not planned because once everyone sees my Super Ultra Premium OS they will abandon Linux.

This will obviously be a problem I’ll have to deal with– people copying my OS. As you guys know the internet is full of thieves who want to steal my source code! I’ll probably have to use an activation and authentication scheme that will require you to verify your identity when you want to use RSUPOS just to make sure no one is sharing it or using it on multiple devices. Everything will be a huge pain for users which should be good for business.

I won’t deny that this is funny and I get your point, but this thread is really unkind and unnecessary.

I’m not sure how familiar you are with the person you are parodying, but they are very young, maybe in their early teens at most. Punching down on a kid isn’t cool. Obviously their project is a sham, it’s 80% fluff and the whole thing is at best a learning experience and a form of creative play (I think they admitted this to a degree), but that’s okay when taken for what it is.

I understand why this person is frustrating some people, especially in terms of ignoring advice and then asking way too much of other people– it’s really absurd and I’ve rolled my eyes at it as well. They are so out of their depth they don’t know what they don’t know. Still, the uncompromising ambition is a virtue of a kind, and it’s uncomfortable to see adults try and knock that out of a kid.

Literally nobody has any obligation to read, engage, or otherwise acknowledge the project or this person if they find it annoying. This person is not actually causing any harm here.

I used to find operating systems fascinating and I’d make shell-type programs that I’d play off as a “real” OS even though I was conscious it wasn’t. It was just a form of creative role play almost, a context to make fun things and an exercise in applying different technical skills. Ultimately, it gave me a foundation for how I learned programming and UI design. These kinds of toy projects are not a wasted effort necessarily, not if it’s done in the spirit of creation, even if they’re never really finished.

i would absolutely agree with you if the person in question wasn’t actively antagonizing people who are trying to help them actually do something cool

i understand where they are coming from and they’re being a prick about it out of some unfounded superiority complex i’m sure (i hope?) they’ll grow out of. had it not been for the attitude i wouldn’t have taken kindly to this thread’s steam blowing-off either

When I was about 15 years old I bought this book, Developing Your Own 32-bit Operating System, from a bookstore:

It came with a companion CD (also on archive . org) with the source code for an example operating system. I read the intro and part of the first chapter and quickly realized that I was missing so much knowledge that there was no way I could write an entire operating system. I felt silly and I was also out $50. So I do understand what it’s like to be young and excited to create new software and see what I can do. But I didn’t need anyone else to tell me I wasn’t being realistic and what I’m parodying is a situation where someone can’t see that they aren’t being realistic even when having an entire forum of people who kindly and regularly give them a reality check.

I certainly don’t mean to hurt anyone’s feelings or cause them to give up on programming. I would gladly make a personal apology if either was the case. That being said I really don’t think anything we say affects this individual’s resolve or self esteem, but if I’m wrong I am sorry.

Haha, I did a similar thing at a similar age. I realised I didn’t even understand how to program it conceptually let alone actually write the code. I suspect the person in question is near that age or a little younger and is about to hit the same realisation.

I am far from being arrogant towards young people. I was one of many who tried to encourage him to build something cool and achievable. But he preferred to portray us as ignorant.

From my point of view, this is imposture, which many people still use very successfully today as adults. To the detriment of those who are actually capable.

It cannot be wrong to guide young people onto the right path at the right time. And if comedy is the way to show him his ignorance, then that’s the way it should be. At least he is old enough to explain the world to adults.

Sidestepping the questions of judgement, intention, or hurt feelings, I think there’s another aspect to this thread worth considering…

For anyone new to the forums, especially in the past week or so, it might have been weird to arrive and see this thread (without knowing the context that long time visitors are well aware of by now). This, combined with the large amount of (arguably) spammy pictures that have been posted by someone in other threads recently had made the forum more… noisy than it usually is.

There’s a natural ebb and flow to forums and spaces online, and I’m sure there have been plenty of weeks where there are few posts about new projects or updates to existiing ones, or interesting and useful questions and ideas related to the topics here. But I’m always a bit nervous about the “noise” increasing, since it might drive people away who would otherwise contribute.

Anyhow, just something to think about. My personal take is that while the target of this thread doesn’t appear to be a troll, the sheer amount of time, energy, and effort others have put into interacting with them still kinda falls under “feeding the trolls”. It’s great that people tried to offer helpful advice and resources (proving it’s a welcoming community) at first, but all the stuff since has been about as valuable as the posts that started it all.

I agree with you on all aspects, but would like to add one important point: The statements made by the ‘troll’ were also likely to cast the forum in a negative light for new visitors.

Expert visitors were surprised by the posts, while laymen were given false impressions and hopes about what can be achieved with a PicoCalc. This is because his presentation is always astonishingly confident.

Maybe this thread has helped him to become a bit more self-reflective. I hope so.
