Unofficial port of Frotz (interactive fiction)

Oh the problem is that you named it /Stories rather than Stories. The name /Stories reported by Frotz indicates that it is looking for a directory named Stories in the root (/) of the SD card, not that the directory itself should be named /Stories. Note that macOS internally replaces the / with a :, so Frotz does not see a directory named Stories (as it is internally named :Stories instead).

THAT DID IT!!! Thank you a billion times over!!!

Last questions (hopefully): not finding any way to save game. I imagine there’s a way, but I don’t see it. Also, when in game, is there a way to back out of it to the main menu?

Thanks, @tabemann for helping @weedave!

This is handled by the story, but I have found that by convention, use “save” to save your progress in the story and “quit” to exit from the story.

I knew that was how it was handled traditionally, but when I entered save, I got the following message:

“enter a file name. Default is “Planetfall-r20-s830708.qzl” (? For list)”. When I enter “?” I get “error opening directory /Stories /Saves/planetfall etc)”.

Thoughts?

Try creating a “Saves” folder under “Stories”.

Got it. Thanks. Sorry, Im coming at this from just a Luddite who likes text adventures and wanted a console I could throw in my bag. I know next to nothing about Raspberry Pi and such. You’ve all been very patient and instructive. I appreciate it. On to Planetfall!

No worries! I hope you enjoy the story!

So question: I save my game a lot, as historically, it’s the only way to go. But I’m getting a message now saying my saves “failed”. Is there a limit to how many saves I can do? Or is there something else happening?

There is a limit of 65K for short names but long bangs take up more entries, perhaps giving you about a quarter of that. Still lots.

Could you copy your saved games off the SD Card and see if that helps? If so, then perhaps there is a bug somewhere.

Just to make sure: are you saying longer names work better?

Other way around – shorter names take up less directory space out of the maximum size of a directory.

Thank you @BlairLeduc

I’d seen Zork had been released open source and thought it would be perfect for PicoCalc but missed that you’d converted Frotz. Just found it this morning and can now stand “West of House”!!

Time to go exploring.

So… I keep saving my game, only to find on the next play that the save has failed. Playing Planetfall right now, and as I get towards the end of the game, the saves fail and I end up having to do it all over again, which, as you might guess… IS VERY FRUSTRATING. Any thoughts?

P.S.: I only have one saved game file, and I keep over writing it. I had several saved previously, but those all failed too, so I opted to try and just overwrite the existing…

Is it just Planetfall where the saves do not work? Where you able to save earlier in the game?

Yes. It was saving with no problems. I’ve tried it with a few different cards. Also tried with short names, long names. Invariably it just fails. I suppose I could try a different game… had only loaded Planetfall with the intention of one title at a time.
