Yo yo uconsolians, its been a while but yh did a little mod on my guy with a screw mountable sma antenna and some hex nuts and screws i had knocking about (any standard kit for pi stuff online will do).
Pretty easy to slip the cable in and with one of the hex nuts screwed on already, you can fit a screw through the slit left for the antenna cable and secure it with a nut inside.
No need for 3d printing or damaging mods to the case while being stable. The right angle adaptor isnt needed but it would fit in my carrying case and had one spare, pretty useful to get the antenna out of the way but its pretty easy to swing about if not careful.
Ill leave link to where i got the screw mount sma but the rest is pretty easy to find and get. Also if you need more info or more photos just shout and ill take some, really cant be bothered right now and also trying not to re read this without a crude mind
Here my “hardcore” way of non destructive antenna mount.
Metal holder is also antenna ground plane - signal improved.
Looks sturdy, I’ll have to try it out! I just hot glued an antenna I bought off of Amazon onto the aluminum at a slight angle. You can see here in this video at 1:43 https://youtu.be/T9q-zhwSPA4?si=rXx49Fzmx7nHj3Ar
most of the 3d printed antenna holders are also nondestructive, and hold on better than hot glue, which will prolly pull the paint off.
Unfortunately I don’t have a 3D printer. However I will say it’s held on pretty well, and since the housing is anodized I’m not too worried about it stripping the color from the aluminum. What’s the thing for if it ain’t to be used and abused? Lol
Im with you on not having a 3d printer @ENG101 and thought that people might wonna see there are other ways of upgrading the antenna from cheap sourceable stuff, i have another upgrade mod in the works just need to get the parts for it and will pop it on here after succeeding.
it possible to print online only for a few money!
I have a few on the way 3d printed from a friend online.
I like the hot glue! That gives me the idea that maybe I’ll mold something out of epoxy putty and glue the SMA in place. Have to think about this a bit more.
I have thought about printing online for uconsole but just got back into this forum and last time i was on here not many people had recieved their uconsole yet let alone started designing 3d printed parts
My hot glue wasn’t stellar, I think I’m going to use epoxy putty to build up a way to attach the SMA connector. I have a stubby antenna that flips 90 degrees that seems to work far better than the included circuit board antenna.
the antenna that it comes with is ok but only after seperating it from the metal casing, but yh i feel like the uconsole is designed so that you can mod and upgrade without having to be too complicated.
I found that if my uConsole is “pointing” away from the access point, and I’m only about 20 feet away, there is a severe loss of speed on 5GHz and major loss of speed on 2.4GHz. That seems to be fixed now. I just need to make a more permanent mounting solution.
The best and simple way is to buy one of these and be done.
