Bookworm 6.6.y for the uConsole and DevTerm

Hi @Rex , just wanted to give you a quick update on the testing I was doing yesterday. I ran the exact same tests in my post above on a CM5 with eMMC32 (CM5004064).

All tests passed with this configuration. Which is pretty much what you are seeing on your end. I used the exact same image, so there is certainly a pattern with the SD card. I know this is pretty much what we were already thinking, but I just figured I would eliminate any uncertainty. I think I am the only one in this thread currently testing with both versions of the CM5 (lite and eMMC).

The only issue I was able to reproduce on the eMMC was the built in screen occasionally failing to initialize on boot. In those cases, the HDMI was working fine and I was able to shutdown and reboot with the power button.

Anyway, I have the SD cards that were failing so I will try to do some diffs and see if I can find something in the part tables or something.

@mclbn, That makes sense to me, it is good that you are thinking about those things. I use wpa_supplicant to deal with NetworkManager nonsense and I use the credential variable in fstab to point to a credential file in my encrypted home directory. I had forgotten that I originally started doing those things for this exact reason, and your way deals with log files and mine does not.

FYI the fan seems to be working on the devterm already, without the extra overlays.

—also, here’s a link to my post about the custom case design.

Got the TEAMGROUP PRO+ cards. They work good for install and then after 2 reboots I start getting blank screens sometimes. But tapping the power button twice will still turn it off. So it’s running it’s just the screen isn’t working??

(running 6.6.78 on uConsole CM5 lite wifi)

Try plugging in an HDMI monitor. Sometimes the system will startup fine but the built in LCD doesn’t initialize. You will see the desktop on your HDMI monitor. Alternatively, if the system is not starting, you’ll see error messages on the external monitor.

If the button double tap is working, then you most likely have the desktop manager running, even if you can’t see it.

@Anthony_Bernier_Rome Nice setup !
I have some heatsinks in my drawers at home and I am thinking about putting one on the back of y uconsole, like yours. What kind of adhesive did you use ?
I am a bit worried of buying something that will not stick in place, I mostly use my uconsole on the move while traveling.

I used whatever comes with these.

Hasn’t moved one bit since install

The screen does still have boot problems I’m trying to work out, it is a lot better then it was though. If you can use the power button to shutdown then the sd is working. Besides the screen the sd card is working as it should? What size did you get?

on Latest kernel, CM5 Lite 8GB, 2025/02/12 Bootloader, Samsung Pro Plus 1TB (UHS-III A2 V30)

failed to open device 'sdcard' (cmd 371a0010 status 1fff0001)

I’m testing in many ways without “sdhci.debug_quirks2=4”.

I just waited for the boot loader to detect(I don’t know if it’s actually a perception or just display) the SDCard by repeating the boot sequence, and it was booted. I tested this for the third time.

+ Hold power key to force shutdown is not work in bootloader.

The CM5 lite is real picky with sd cards. The power button wont work for forced shutdowns if the kernels not loaded. The TEAMGROUP PRO+ sd cards seem to work well, I bought some but I don’t have lite to test with yet. I think we need to make a spreadsheet or wiki for the known working and nonworking cards.

I found out that when after the boot loader is initialized and then the SDCard is inserted, it will boot normally.
So I flashed EEPROM with the settings below so that the bootloader could detect SDCard repeatly.

[all]
BOOT_UART=1
BOOT_ORDER=0xf1
SD_BOOT_MAX_RETRIES=-1
POWER_OFF_ON_HALT=1
WAKE_ON_GPIO=0

It’s a temporary method, but I was able to boot for sure. It seems that the bootloader needs some treat from rpi devs. :slight_smile:

In addition, it seems that the hardware requirements for the SDCard of CM5 Lite and CM4 Lite are different.

The internal pull-up resistance of the CM5 Lite and the external board pull-up resistance of the CM4. There is an ambiguous explanation on the data sheet.

CM5 Lite

CM4 Lite

In my opinion (I’m not H/W engineer), to use CM5 Lite, we need to mod our uConsole board. (Or just look for available SDCards)

yes the sd card seemed to be working correctly. I got the 128gig

@paragonnov Good find, we can add that to the fixes for the more adventurous users. I’ve started a list of reported working sd cards. I think a working sd will be the easiest route for most users.

I used the TEAMGROUP PRO+ SD cards for testing as well. I still had occasional Bootloader errors. I tried some very expensive filming cards, and some very cheap “pack in” cards. I had issues with all of them.

I’m not disagreeing that the card makes a difference. Speed perhaps? But I think there is something else going on. Especially with the patterns of reboots vs cold starts. And the card always booting correctly the first time but not on subsequent starts. I am trying to figure out if there is something related to the partitioning that is happening when the card is expanded. Maybe the size of the card is more important than the speed. Not sure yet.

I wish the bootloader errors were a little more specific.

FYI, I’ve had zero boot issues on my pi 5 devterm when using an official raspberry pi tested SD card.

I got mine from one of the official Canadian dealers. I imagine there are American ones as well.

Well that’s not good, I was hoping it was a class or speed issue with them. We might have to do the custom EEPROM settings for it to be reliable.
