I would like to have confirmation that in order to use the CM5 lite, no eEMC, WiFi in my uConsole I will have to purchase a “Mini Base board” and do something to my CM5 board?
IOW is there any other way to make this thing work w/o buying another piece of hardware that I would probably use just once?
you need to buy an “IO board” only for EMMC (no sdcard) cm5 version because you need to flash that EMMC with extra board.
so if you are going with ‘sd card (lite)’ cm5 version – you do not need to buy any additional board (you need to have a sd card reader)
(though you may need to have additional sd cards for the first boot to update eeprom, but may be not)
With the upcoming release of NVME capable adapter boards from @vileer & @lululvlv I have changed up the EEPROM config to be able to use them.
If you have a CM5 lite and are having problems with the sd card booting or have already updated the config but plan on getting a NVMe board. You need to edit your EEPROM and your CM5 lite has to have updated firmware that was released after 2025-01-06. Check using vcgencmd version to update sudo rpi-eeprom-update
sudo rpi-eeprom-config -e To edit the eep…
Ok, so all I need to do is flash a Rex CM5 image to an SD card?
That’ll be great! I’m off to try it

if it won’t work – update eeprom.
yep, just flash it to sdcard, do not apply any custom settings, then wait till the first automatic reboot and then you can use it.
I tried Ubuntu & Trixie CM5 images on two different SD cards.
Neither did anything on power on. I don’t have what I need to look at the HDMI output right now.
Too bad. So many things about this environment seem to be just a big pita.
Put the CM4 and its sd card back in. It is slow but it’s better than nothing.
check the first post in rex’s distro thread or follow this instuction

Back to my original question - this sounds like I need more hardware in order to be able to use the cm5. Ugh
you do not need additional hardware to use cm5 lite,
but you may need to find a magical working sd card for the initial boot to update eeprom. it’s an issue of the cm5.
and then you can use any sd card.

Well I don’t know what the magic recipe is, but I’ve tried three of Rex’s distros on 12 different SD cards and nothing works with the CM5.
There’s a day I can’t get back…
I’ve put back the CM4 and (knock on wood) I’ll not try this nonsesense again.
