If you try to type in lines longer than about 42 characters, you’ll get a message in red at the bottom of the screen warning that the line is too long. To get around this, type the last half of the line first, then place the cursor at the beginning of the line and type the first half. The end of the line will disappear off the screen but will still be in the program (or text document)

Or type the second half of the line on the next line then backspace the start of that one and voila !
I often edit long lines the same way, split in two then backspace it together again.
