Kali 7.1.y for the uConsole and DevTerm

look at the list of packages being upgraded, identify which one might have a kernel or device tree update, and hold that package in the future

I’ll have to flash an SD with Kali to test and hold that package an a image update.
Kali is really just ment to be used for the tools you need and that’s it. It’s not supposed to be a daily driver, so updating it isn’t that much of a problem.
If there are tools in Kali you use on a daily basis, I’d suggest installing them on Trixie. You’d have a much easier time in the long run.

Thanks, Rex!! I’m actually trying out all the versions to pick one as my daily driver, and I’ll give Trixie a shot.

Kali is based on Debian Testing, so it’ll have newer kernel versions than stock Debian.

Hi Rex, the error occurs after the kernel update from 6.12.67 to 6.12.78. After that, the display and keyboard no longer work. It would be great if you could fix it.

It’s not the kernel causing it. It was doing the same thing when you updated with kernel 6.12.67 staying the same.

Hi Rex, is there a quick-fix?!

Not a quick one, but you can install each update singley until you find out what package breaks the system, then reflash and put that package on hold and report it here.

Hello again. So, I uninstalled cryptsetup. cryptsetup-initramfs caused an error during installation (?!?). Then I installed all the remaining updates (I mounted the image on my laptop and performed the updates there). I flashed the image afterward, and it boots. It’s now up to date, however, uConsole doesn’t start after I install the new kernel. The screen remains dark. With an external monitor, I can see the login screen, but I can’t do anything. The keyboard doesn’t work, not even with an external keyboard. It’s like it’s frozen!

Are you using a cm5? If so can you try and put kernel=kernel8.img into the config.txt in the pi5 section. Let me know if that fixes it

Yes, I have a CM5. I’ll test it! I’ll get back to you later.

uConsole won’t start anymore. Unfortunately, I can’t check it with an external monitor since I’m not at work. The keyboard backlight works, though :joy:. SSH isn’t working, so it’s stuck somewhere.

Not sure, I’ll have to check when I get home.
Are you doing anything not stock. Like encrypting your drive?

Hooray, bug found! During the update, the 6.12.78 files are being installed in /boot/firmware/. This doesn’t work with Kali Linux. There, the files need to be installed in /boot/. Oh, and I had another big question: Is btrfs supported in the kernel?

The image also boots without kernel=kernel8.img.

I cannot replicate this on 6.12.67. Where did you find 6.12.78 for download? :open_mouth:

The kernel is in Rex’s repository. If you’re using his image, the repository is in your sources.list!

Oh sick sorry! Just realized it’s okay to do the kernel upgrade for my version.

Hey Rex, I know it has been a while, but I was looking into getting Nexmon working on the CM5 and came across this: https://www.kali.org/blog/raspberry-pi-wi-fi-glow-up/ . It looks like the newer Kali kernels can just load the patch using DKMS now. Do you know if this approach would compile correctly against your custom kernel , or would we still need a fully updated image from you? I haven’t got my hands on the hardware myself yet so I couldn’t test.

the dkms module will be built separately from the kernel. It should work then, normally. I can test it later this evening.

Hello, so I tested Nexmon. Installation runs without errors. Monitor mode works, but injection isn’t working for me. I’m using CM5.
