I’m moving over to kernel 7.1.y and want some people to test it before i put it in the repo for general updates. I’ve tested on all the hardware I have but need tests done with the new uConsole panel and also the DevTerm panel. Flash a new SD then download and install this kernel and let me know how it goes. Just making sure the panel still turns on, if it does great! That’s all I need.

How to know if I have the new panel? I received my uConsole in May. And how to test the kernel? I just install it it with “sudo dpkg -i kernel-7.1.deb”?
based on the content of akrex-kernel-7.1.2.deb
I think the way of installing it is “sudo dpkg -i akrex-kernel-7.1.2.deb”

I’ve made some more changes with the display driver for the uconsole. it use to have 2 drivers one for the cm4/5 and one for the cm3/4s. the cm3/4s driver only worked with the old screen. i’ve unified it, one driver for the cm3/4s/4/5 working on all screens. i’ve tested the cm3/4s/5 on the old screen so it should work.
i need someone to test this image here on some of the newer screens. so i made this test image so all you have to do is flash it to a sd and and if the screen displays an image or not post it here with your config. something like:
uconsole v3 panel cm5
i also need the devterm tested.
hopefully someone has a cm3/4s and a newer panel to also test the results.

I’ve recompiled the kernel to 7.1.3 so it works on my Ubuntu 26.04 LTS image for my CM4 uConsole. (Might need to build a new Arch image since I’m using swaywm…)
Since I have the setup ready, I should be able to compile and test newer kernel releases, as 7.x.x is no longer maintained as an LTS release.
If any further testing/help is needed, please feel free to reach out.

I have a v2 panel and a v3 panel and they both worked ok.

You using a cm4 or 5?
Do you know what version of the panel you have? About when did you get your device?

I’m using a v3 panel at the moment but tested with a spare v2 panel(they’re both considered the new panel I think), no issues at all, but the kernel I used is the one I recompiled for my 26.04 build, happy to test on a fresh build from the .deb kernel you’ve hosted, let me know

You compiling it is fine. I just really wanted the new unified driver tested to make sure I didn’t break anything combining the drivers. So your Ubuntu now should work with the CM3/4s/4/5 when using the correct overlay.

How close is it to being ready for prime time implementation!
It’s live now. The only feedback I didn’t get is the cm3 on the newer panels. Cm3 didn’t work on the newer panels before anyway so if it doesn’t work with my driver changes there’s no regressions. From my testing and the behavior across the CMS with the driver, the cm3 should work on the newer panels now also.
Have it working. Running trixie on CM5 in my new uConsole with latest version panel.

akrex-kernel 7.1.3-v8-16k+ from apt does not work for me here on cm4 with i suppose the ‘old’ panel. neither does keyboard work. external hdmi does work, as does wifi so i was able to ssh in and recover.
i am happy to provide more details if needed.
