OrangePi 5 for uConsole?

Probably everyone have heard about the release of Orange Pi CM5. Judging by specs, it is more than worthy competitor to Raspberry Pi CM5.

I am sure that many users of this forum (including me) would love to have the capacities OrangePi CM5 in their uConsoles. But is it technically feasible? Has anyone tried it?

I’m especially interested in the following:

  • Is OrangePI CM5 compatile with uConsole motherboard port-wise? Some sources say yes, but I am not sure
  • Is it compatible in terms of power supply from motherboard?
  • What about heat? Will existing uConsole cooling system satisfy OrangePi CM5?

I will be grateful for any feedback/thoughts/experience on this matter.

I’ve been messing around with a Radxa CM5 trying to get it to work with the uConsole, pin wise the basics should work, no wifi/bt though. The provided kernel leaves a lot to be desired though, I’ve managed to get some stuff working but not enough to put anything out.

@Rex , thank you for sharing. When you say “kernel” - do you mean the kernel of the OS that is supplied along with uConsole?

The kernel that is on Radxa’s GitHub, you can’t build a working kernel for the Radxa CM5 from mainline.

So, the same will be with Orange Pi, got it. The thing that I like is that OrangePi OS is based on Arch, which is my daily driver

I know the CM4 isn’t as fast, but you can run Arch on the uConsole.

I am writing this text from a uConsole with Arch and latest KDE. And I must say it runs at very decent speeds :slightly_smiling_face:

Can you use the kernel from Armbian or from something like the a06? All are Rockchip based.

@Greg_E , actually Orange PI has an official OS. But I do not think it has divers for uConsole screen, keyboard, motherboard, ball pointer, etc

I’m pretty sure it will not. If you flip it over it has 3 headers instead of the 2 that the CM4 has.

It will still work the 3rd connector isn’t needed and will not interfere with the adapter card.

@Rex , so CM5 will physically fit into the existing uConsole board, right? I just wonder if that 3rd set of pins prevents the new board from clicking in physically.

@Christopher_Smith , thank you - that`s an important question to figure out before buying a new compute module )

The Radxa CM5 has a 3rd row and I use it in a Raspberry Pi IO board right now. I’ve also had it in my uConsole and it “works” it powers up, but I don’t have the screen working yet. The 3rd row will not touch on the adapter board, but I have a WaveShare IO board that the 3rd row will touch a capacitor so wont plugin all the way.
