Well, I bought one

Well I bought one. I don’t know if that was a good idea or not. I thought I could use it as a calculator since that is what the picture shows. I don’t really know BASIC, but I’ll have a bit of fun with it. I guess it is back to the vape shop to buy more batteries when this finally comes.

Despite the snobbery that many software engineers display, BASIC is a wonderful language and the PicoMite/MMBasic that the PicoCalc is running is IMO a particularly good implementation with ongoing support from its developers.

I’ve personally written a Scott Adams adventure interpreter and a Z-Machine (Infocom adventure game) interpreter for MMBasic (https://sockpuppetstudios.com/) plus other odds and ends*.

* I offer no guarantees that these will work “out of the box” on the PicoCalc as they were developed on other MMBasic platforms and there are differences, especially in the display handling and whether #INCLUDE is supported or not.

You can download the User Manual (approx 230 pages including a BASIC programming tutorial) on this site Geoff's Projects - BASIC Interpreter for the Raspberry Pi Pico
I’m gonna read it while waiting for my Picocalc

Well mine has been despatched today after ordering 10 days ago but I’ve no idea what I’ll use it for or anything about BASIC. I think the best perspective to have on CPi products is that they’re for exploration. It gets you learning something new, tinkering and the like and if you have kids then you can pass the torch on. Have fun with it.
