WARNING! Danger, Will Robinson!
That’s a 480x320 screen. They are counting the RGB subpixels: 480(wide)x3(R+G+B) then x320 (height).
480x3x320 = 460,800, there you got the 461k
I learnt that the hard way, I won’t let you fall for it!
(I wish I could drop by more often, but it’s being a horrible, hectic day so far)
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR CLARIFYING THIS!! I had no idea what on earth that meant! DOES NOT COMPUTE! This is for certain a wisdom gained, and I thank you for it! Continues to flail arms like a robot
It’s hilarious that 720x640 just so happenned to add up to the same number.
I should have articulated it better: That’s the precise type of screen I’m hoping to receive soon. Yours might also work, I don’t know about its connectors, will check after lunch (12:20 here, still have to cook).
Think “hype”. Like “this screen has a megazillion pixels, it’s better than our competitors’!”
So today is officially a bad day. I’m trying to make it better…
@javelinface, I’ve been looking at Canon Powershot screens; I noticed I didn’t have a model number to focus on (wink-wink-nudge-nudge) but I’ve a bad feeling about those screens. Weird wires. The screen for the Powershot SX700 HS has no backlight and the cable might be 45 pins (hard to count, blurry photos). My eyes got sore after a while trying to make up the pins on the SX610’s cable, which incidentally has a smaller cable which could be for a touch sensor, for power, or just for making me feel miserable. The list goes on: I haven’t found a replacement Powershot screen which has a 40 pin cable I could point at and say “this is it”. If you tell me the model, I’ll go search for it.
The screen I’m waiting for may arrive on friday; tomorrow is father’s day over here so no deliveries. Just in case, it might be an Innolux EJ030NA-01B. If so, it’ll be 51 pins instead of 40 and I’ll still have to wait some 3 weeks to properly check on it (more stuff is on its way for totally unrelated stuff, again two birds one stone). So I took a break from writing this, hit my head against the wall, made some calculations…
And I’ve just ordered a 3.5" 480x320 IPS screen, 10€ including shipping. Because it’s an ILI9481 and that, my dear friends, has native Linux support. The ILI9488 is about 1€ cheaper, but it’s TFT (not IPS, those viewing angles and colors do matter) and as far as I know FBTFT is not accepting new driver submissions since a while ago… so I’d have to work harder to make an inferior display work. I’d rather pay that extra € I’ve already posted a couple of times the Aliexpress link from which I’ve bought this screen, would anyone want it again? Not an affiliate link or anything, I didn’t even get a discount for test units from that vendor…
It may take a month for it to arrive, maybe less. Do you guys think I’ll have to compile a kernel for it to work?
Maybe the Penguin God will smile upon me after all.
Gotta love and trust canon for the proprietary … well, everything! It could be something to do with a reed switch or similar that detects the orientation of the screen, ie if it’s one that swivels out. But the strange thing was, no back light?? That is very odd! I’ll look at mine, which is a Power Shot G11. I haven’t actually tried pulling it apart for reference yet. Too much “oh but what if I get it working” vibes. (and of course I’ll never use it, since I’ve got better DSLRs and modern compacts now)
Perhaps using a camera screen may introduce more problems, with more and more proprietary wiring that I’m sure they won’t give up in a heartbeat.
As good as being frugal can be, I think the 1€ difference would be well worth not having to spend countless hours being frustrated, and having buyer’s remorse :P. I’d say that providing a link would be super helpful and surely not violating any forum policies or rules. (Famous last words)
The penguin god indeed does smile! If it’s one with native linux support, then you’re laughing! The hardest part would have been getting some el cheapo ghetto board, and scouring the internet for data sheets, trying to work out exactly who the vendor is, and then trying to find drivers that match. It should be as simple as using the drop down menu from the makeconfig GUI while building your kernel. I’d say a big resounding yes to getting it done before your package arrives. That said, it’s not making it that’s the issue. It’s the inevitable troubleshooting when it doesn’t work ahha! But if the screen you’re getting has native support, then chances are there’s a lot of stuff you can look up to help point you in the right direction.
I bet you. The screen that they were thinking of bringing out. It’s probably going to be the same one you’re getting; just with a customised enclosure, and pretty adaptor board.
No need to take your camera apart: have a look here. Got backlight and all. But not friendly cables, sorry.
I’m a bit worried about the screen frequency; I’ve never seen an IPS screen under 60Hz but it’s being one of those days everything goes wrong, so I’m worried. Maybe it’s nothing. Anyway, as you said, here goes the link for the screen I purchased (again). It’s the penultimate, “3.5 IPS no touch” ILI9841. Touch… I intend to use one of those tempered glass screen protectors for DSLRs in a custom-made 3D printed casing + GS shell… which I will obviously share with all of you. I intend to make a screen module that fits the custom shell, so swapping the new screen for the original one will be simple and clean, no need to worry when opening the case; if the screen were fixed to the shell, opening the GS could be tricky and putting it together would be no fun.
My old (pen & paper) RPG Club had a book named just like that, where we recorded for posterity…
“Dragon? What dragon!?”
“I know I am on fire but what do you mean I cannot Dodge?”
“Don’t worry, I’m sure there are no traps in this dungeon…”
And many-many-many others!
Wait, what? There’s a GUI for makeconfig? What witchcraft is this? It’s been ages since I last compiled a kernel; actually, I think it was for a PPC… a G3 Mac maybe. I’ve recently installed SuSE in an old laptop I’ve set aside for “Clockwork GameShell Stuff”. I took out my hard-copy SuSE manuals, even though those are for version 9 and this is… 15.1… I’m feeling old now…
I’ll find my way around it, no worries.
Not really like “a lot of stuff”. Mostly fb_ili9481.c and random comments mentioning it. But I couldn’t really put much effort into it earlier today, so I guess you’ll be right (as usual).
I can’t do much about the adapter board but about the pretty enclosure I can do something, 3D printed. I know “pretty” doesn’t mean the same for all of us but that’s notmy fault. A word or two from the devs on this matter would have been nice. I believe this kind of mod can breathe new life… and now I sound cheesy. But seriously, “highly hackable” + “upgraded screens” smells like success, good for everyone involved, another awesome selling point, you name it.
We shall make it happen!
P.S.: I… I didn’t notice this post was becoming… this long…
