Have you received a Devterm? What are your thoughts?

Got mine yesterday!
Really excited about the little thing!

I haven’t played with it a lot yet, but a few things I’m already annoyed about are:

  • The keyboard isn’t ideal in some spots, it feels alright in the middle I guess, but it’s a bit sticky and not clicky around the edges
  • The antenna wasn’t a perfect fit… I think I broke it a little bit when trying to fit the battery module. Not sure if the solder there was a bit too bumpy… anyway… I think that if I try to disassemble it, the antenna will need some re-soldering.
  • Also very easy to damage the screen housing, I’ve bent it a little bit

Otherwise, it’s awesome! I’m really looking forward for what’s coming from the community. I’d love to have a keyboard replacement with some other layout, maybe ortholinear

That’s what I thought was happening too initially, but it was actually a problem with the thermal printer head itself (I think the gap widths are coincidental). Have a look at it and see if there are black spots: those look like blown thermal elements (which is what I thought happened to mine) but are actually carbon buildup:

I removed mine with isopropyl alcohol, a cotton bud, and a fair bit of elbow grease / pressure. But then it happened again on the next print, so I’m still trying to figure out what triggers it.

Just to clarify for non native speakers Elbow grease - Wikipedia is an idiom.

Not this cleaning product:

Its a funny name

If anyone is interested, here’s an unboxing set of photos of the devterm. I finally got mine, and have been holding back on building, just admiring it.
I would almost consider getting one just to frame! (Just kidding)

I personally don’t have the attention span to watch videos of unboxing, so if you’re like me, hopefully this is useful to you!

Tip: Take some close-up pictures of the core module before sticking the heat sink on, for future reference

I took about 50 shots of the entire build process. Here’s the few that were of the A06 core module, in case anyone forgot to take a shot

Oh hey! Congrats you got yours!
Did you get the PCB I sent you? I’m curious if it fits with standoffs just like EXT board. (I’m still waiting on the A04).

YEAH!! Oh did I not DM you when I got it?? Ahh! Huge apologies!
That’s a today job re testing and posting photos of the board!
I looked at it just eyeing up how it lines up. You got the angle of the ribbon cable bend perfect! The pegs also looked like they lined up.
The only thing I’ll look into immediately implementing before making it a permanent fixture is integrating audio pogo pin pads, fan and perhaps UART port for debugging.

Here’s the pogo pins and fan. The stock expansion board is pretty empty!
Also there is a nice door on the expansion slot! (I took a lot of WIP photos!!)

Awesome awesome! Yeah that board looks pretty simple like the schematics suggested. That’s good! It means we’ll have an easier time reproducing the stock features on an updated EXT board.

Awesome!

Really impressed with the build setup and quality. Everything feels very well considered! Trying to figure out the optimal software setup now. Any suggestions for a vim friendly window manager?
