Updated Images for new uConsole screens

I’ve updated the image with my latest kernel with support for the new panels. ParrotOS itself is a little outdated and breaks on upgrade to ParrotOS 7.1. So be careful upgrading stuff.

Thank you very much, this image is OK. What is breaking when updating to ParrotOS 7.1 ? Maybe I can help solve this…

And would you please tell us what you exactly changed in the kernel to support new panels ? I have other distrib I’d like to port to uConsole ?

the uconsole screen and power management chip require custom drivers that aren’t in the mainline kernel.
Rex’s kernel sources are on github

CM4 with stock sticker antenna. maybe I need to install better antenna…

I’d start by moving the sticker away from the case with a foam or plastic spacer

Yeah, if you have it stuck to the case you’re going to have a bad time.

@Rex, I used your image, upgrade on ParrotOS 7.1…which broke the system as your stated !

So, I’ve managed to repair it painfully. I had to manually install many packages, respect order because of dependencies, remove old ones if needed, and finally issue an apt upgrade to get a running up to date system.

I also had to change something in keyring because some raspberrypi repo signing key expired on 2026 Feb 1st…

I had a hard time but now it’s OK with newest packages releases.

Hello, I’m using your custom images for my ucobsole well. BTW, could you consider making armbian kde version, too? It’s based on kde neon, based on ubuntu lts.

I’m going to be working on a Debian KDE her in the next few days.

Debian kde? Isn’t KDE already available with raspberry pi os image? I have installed KDE Plasma on raspberry pi os lite and worked well except kde discover app was laggy.

Distributions with compositors or window managers typically come with strong support for that graphical environment out of the box. If you are an advanced enough user to know how to install and configure a different GUI than the one that came with your OS installation, the benefit is in convenience and (ideally) the distributor’s better knowledge in that area.

Oh, understood. He is polishing the debian kde experience. right?

Yes, sure you can install a new DE with the lite image. Then you have to figure out all the rotation issues yourself, among other tiny issues. I’m just going to roll it all up for ease of use and for more novice users.

Those are what I needed! Thanks!

Thanks so much for this! A huge amount of work! I am having trouble with the Ubuntu image. I installed it and it booted once - I added settings, then it restarted and just hung on the loading screen. Then I tried to reinstall and now the screen won’t turn on at all…

Using CM5 with the HackerGadgets upgrade kit.

Any advice welcome please!

Is it a cm5 lite? Are you booting off nvme?
If it is a light and you’re not booting off nvme you need to still do the eeprom config changes and update to be able to boot reliably off at SD card.

Not a lite - it’s got 32gb emmc - booting off that… I’m confused what’s going on! Pi Imager writes the image fine, but I read your note about customization causing a failed boot, so thought I’d try Balena Etcher just in case, and that won’t complete the write - says there is something wrong with the image… I don’t believe it, but not sure what else to try! Thanks for the reply.

You can try extracting the image and using etcher. I know RPi imager can flash compressed images. I use usbimager personally.
If it fails again try and redownload the image.

Redownload, and it installed this time! Was all working fine til I ran an update and crashed hard during a kernel update!

Now no boot again :frowning: . Not expecting you to fix it, just thought you might be interested! Thanks.

Distro you’re using?
Crashed how? Like system freeze, hung, turned off?
Batteries or mains power?
