A short interview with Indie Imprint Dev Team

indieimprintdev

Team Name: Indie Imprint Dev Team

Game Name: GYATM

Development Story:

As you know, we currently have our ‘main’ game for GYATM in progress on itch: https://indieimprint.itch.io/gyatm

Our lead dev bought a GameShell via kickstarter, and absolutely loved the promise of the device - a Pi in a really fun housing with a great form factor. When the game jam rolled around we thought it would be a great opportunity to port an idea we were already developing over.

The original premise of the game was a sci-fi resource harvesting and management game set on Mars, with lots of little pop-culture sci-fi nods and jokes. Dilithium, Beryllium Cubes, a Boson Cloud to catch a high-speed ship, etc. The big game has quite a few more, though we’re in full Starship Troopers mode while we prepare for the Alpha launch.

wow, we had not logged on here for a while, had no idea we won something! Great to be part of the first GameShell Game Jam, it was fun and interesting to see what everyone came up with. Hopefully the first of many future ones that inspire people to create games for this platform

Hey thanks so much Hal. We are a group of three people who are definitely not experienced game developers, but we do have a lot of general software development experience and a love of games.

The core programming team for The Melon People consists of myself, Ned “Mad Ned” Utzig, and Rick Meitzler. We are both “seasoned” (ok, old guy) software engineers with decades of non-game development experience. This is our first game jam, and also the first game project we have done together though.

The third member of our team is my daughter Lisa Utzig, who is a Jazz musician and bitmap artist, her work on Planet Busters included the Veedo and Buster dialog sprites and some of the monsters and planet tiles.

Being old guys, Rick and myself have a pretty good appreciation for retro-gaming, since we were around playing these since the 1970’s. We’ve been collecting retro emulators and consoles along with various games for a while, when we heard about the Clockwork Pi GameShell. It seemed like a cool concept, so we each ordered one, with the hopes of using it for development of games. When the game jam came along we decided to take a whack at it, I had the idea for Planet Busters in my head for a while so it was fun to have an excuse to actually bring it to life.

We are currently working on a sequel version to Planet Busters, with improved graphics and extended game play. So far it’s been a great adventure, looking forward to bringing more fun games to the platform!

Congratulations for all Game Jam award winners! :trophy::medal_sports::2nd_place_medal::3rd_place_medal:

All award recipients must provide us an address for Ethereum-supported digital wallet. Pls. PM me or email yong (at) clockworkpi.com
We will send your CPI Points award to your digital wallet directly.

Currently, usage for CPI Points are:

  • Exchage for current ClockworkPi product, e.g. current GameShell cost 200 PTS each.
  • Save as investment for future value appreciation based on ClockworkPi project growth potentials.
  • Exchage for future ClockworkPi products and special accessaries and souvenir merchandise.

Just a follow-up note after the first game jam, for anyone interested. Shortly after receiving our CPI award points for our game jam entry, we decided to cash a good chunk of them in with clockwork for some game shell kits, which we’ll be using for development and as payment for future collaborators. Process went smoothly and we are really happy to be starting in on a sequel to our Planet Busters Jam entry game. Thanks Yong for your help in exchanging the CPI points for kits, and best of luck to Game Jam 2 competitors. Kind of jealous of the current jam participants because we liked doing the previous one, but the timing was a little too close to do them back to back, we needed a breather. Maybe next one though who knows!
