Best current image to run x86/x64 and Windows software?

My uConsole is still on the default image from way back when it was new. While I am enjoying a lot of things on it, I never got x86/x64 and Windows software support going reliably. Dosbox also was a bit hit and miss on some titles like Whales Voyage.

I haven’t been active on the forums for a while and am a bit lost looking at the many custom images.

Could you recommend me an image with these requirements:

  • fairly recent kernel
  • apt working and update/upgrade won’t brick the system
  • box86 working
  • box64 working
  • wine working
  • dosbox working

I want to play:

  • OpenXcom (never got it to work)
  • Baba is You (only thing that always worked great)
  • Mobile Suit Baba (need wine I think?)
  • Age of Empires (never tried, but would like to play again)
  • Whales Voyage
  • Harrier Assault
  • KKND

Check the image in this link:

Has all that working.

FYI, wine as an standalone would not always work. You have to use wrappers, to deal with containers for different wine versions, like PlayOnLinux or Bottles.

Cheers!

I’ll give that one a try, thanks!

You seem to be the creator of that image? Would you be willing to assist me, if I run into trouble?

First issue: Straight on first boot It offers me to upgrade to 24.04.1 LTS. Is it safe to upgrade or will it break the system?

I maintain just a script that generates the image, and I use it.

Github allows me to store it online, to download anytime I want to reflash, and I dont mind to share it.

But please, go to my thread if you want support

Basically is a Ubuntu for raspi 22.04 LTS version, with a kernel that already has the drivers. It will behave as the vanilla Ubuntu for raspi, and you got long term support patreonised by Canonical and the community.

Upgrading to 24.04 will break wifi, don’t do it. :stop_sign: Just click on don’t remind me. Running apt upgrade -y does not break the system, but if you run do-release-upgrade, it will break.

I am working to fix it

I would not try running Windows on it, nor on my RPI 4, but concentrate the effort to make a more efficient OS to run better on a more efficient processor, that’s why we have ARM today. And I don’t understand why there are still many people testing new ARM boards with games, and judge how capable the new boards are by how good games are playing on them. My ultimate dream is to completely replace my x86 box with an ARM/RISC-V one running on Linux or Freebsd. I had enough pain in my neck with Windows already, sorry to say that. Btw I did try to boot Windows on my RPI 4 but gave up, it took over a minute to completely load, especially booting from a slow uSD, that’s the failure of the design on the RPI 4 without internal storage, that’s why I want a CM4 with eMMC, but that opens another can of worm.
