Update: I uploaded a new bookworm with desktop image. The change in the panel driver messed up my old CM4 rotation configs so I had to redo them. It’s all fixed now, let me know how the image is!

Thanks for CM5 support! For me audio is a really nice to have feature, so I’m wondering what would be great is to have USB audio on the expansion PCB. Assuming we will never have GPIO audio.

In other words, should I be motivated to learn and design a sound board, should I look into USB or is there some other interface easily available through the connector that would be better?

There are other ways of doing it but by far simplest would integrate a usb dac, hub and give yourself a few external usb ports on a expansion card. There are 2 usb lines on the expansion slot already. Use one for the dac and one for a hub.

Thanks, exactly what I was looking for. I have an headphone DAC (apple) which is tiny and USB C. It could be added to an internal USB port. But am I wrong to expect it to be able to drive the onboard speakers?

Another question I couldn’t find answer to: is the headphone jack functional?

Would using bluetooth audio bypass the lack of audio drivers for the CM5?

the headphone jack and speaker run off the same gpio, so no.
I have a open usbc internal and i also have a cheap usbc dac, i’m going to cut up some old earbuds and see it they will power the tiny speakers.

Yes BT audio works good and is in sync when watching youtube, thats more then I can say for my phone.

That’s a great temporary workaround to use BT until rPi releases the proper audio drivers

The uConsole jack has no mic so either way you’re going to have to switch (to USB or bluetooth audio) if you want to use this thing for everything = Talk to people on Tox f.ex.

I’m thinking USB for stationary use and bluetooth (still havent tried, I wonder if the mic works ok) on the move.

The website states:

  • 3.5 headphone jack, supports microphone input

But I just tried and indeed it doesn’t work. It might be hard to believe but I was pumped to read microphone input support through headphone jack. It was my selling point. I just didn’t try it yet.
Now I wonder if they mean the headphone jack on Cellular version? Needless to say this is a bit deceptive… even the screenshot specifically refers to the mainboard jack.

PS: sorry, I understand this is off topic.
