I’ve just built my DevTerm kit. However I will not receive the 18650 batteries until a few days and I’m a bit anxious. I wonder if it is possible and safe to power on the DevTerm using only the power adapter, without batteries installed.

No problem as long as your power source is powerful enough and cable is good.

Exactly, having battery will prevent brownout if you power brick do not provide enough current during a spike, but other than that, a DevTerm can safely be run from a power supply only.
I tried this today: no batteries but plugged into an older phone charger bank with a USB-A to -C cable.
It worked but made a very disconcerting noise: kind of a burbling whine/squeal the whole time.
Is that just a harmless side effect? I couldn’t tell if it was from the speakers or one of the motors or an actual chip/component, so I just started the shutdown process as soon as it finished booting!
