Need help with Radxa CM5 RK3588S2

I have a Radxa CM5 RK3588S2 16GB/126GB. At least that is what I ordered. The actual chip is labeled RK3582. I’m not sure how rock labels their chips.

It’s mounted in the Radxa carrier board with the Hacker Gadgets AIO v2. I’ve tried booting from SD and flashing the loader an emmc (see image).

I get no output to the screen or HDMI out.

Any advice will be appreciated.

I’ll be honest, this is my first CM board of any kind so I’m still reading through a lot and will probably get a PI cm4/5 carrier from Hacker Gadgets to get things going. From what I read there are still a lot of issues with the Radxa modules and I can probably help with some development work once I get the basics of the uConsole figured out.

I think you misread the chip label. A RK3582 is not an RK3588S2 (which is on the non-lite RadxaCM5).

There is a significant price and performance difference between the two, and there’s no AI accellaration, no GPU, and fewer CPU cores on an RK3582. And more importantly there is no CM5 module with that chip :slight_smile:

So here is what I have.

OK. I was wrong, they do make a CM5 Lite with RK3582. And it does have a binned NPU but no GPU as I stated. And that is what you have, you do not have the full CM5 but the lite. They sent you the wrong model, and I hope you can return it or get a refund.

Unlikely as I ordered it back when I did the uConsole around the end of January. I take it as my fault for not checking it out closely when it arrived or they probably would have made it right.

Anyone know of a US based seller of the RK3588 with 16GB ram?

I am going to pick up the PI CM5 WiFi 16GB-Ram Lite as there is an authorized dealer with them in stock in the US. I’ll just have to get the other carrier board too.

Ok, so looking at the Pi CM5 modules there is only $30USD difference between the WiFi 16GB Lite ( CM5116000) and the WiFi 16GM 64GB eMMC (CM5116064). Is there any reason to not just the one with 64GB eMMC?

As for getting the correct Radxa board it looks like I want one of the following:
CM5 RK3588S2 16/128 (RM120‑D16E128R26)
CM5 RK3588S2 32/256 (RM120‑D32E256R26)

What I have now is:
CM5 RK3582 16/128 (RM120‑D8E128R27)

Are there any images available that support the Radxa CM5 module I currently have? If not I have not investigated yet, but is it possible I could cross-compile a kernel and build an image that would get it up and running? (i.e. Is there enough information and support for this module to do so?)

SD cards can be bigger than 64GB, and eMMC models can’t use SD cards
if you don’t have the hacker gadgets cm5 adapter you also need extra hardware to flash the eMMC.
The eMMC on cm5 is faster than SD

Thanks. I remember reading that now. I have the full Hacker Gadgets upgrade minus the Pi CM4/5 carrier board as I ordered the Radza one. So I’d just need to get the carrier board.

Since I have a 512GB M.2 in there fast boot off the eMMC and mounting the M.2 filesystem seems like the fastest boot time.

However, that has the drawback that to flash new OS to the eMMC you have to take it apart again. Or that is my understanding. You can upgrade what is in the eMMC as you can write, you just cannot write a whole new image.

So the choice is eMMC if I’m not going to be swapping and testing various images, or the Lite and booting from SD card. I’ll probably go with the latter.

I want to see if I am correct about the Radza though. My understanding is that it CAN boot from either eMMC or SD. Is that accurate or have I misunderstood something with it?

if you have the nvme ssd too you can just boot from that
radxa can use both SD and eMMC, but Pis can not
with the hackergadgets adapter you don’t need to remove the compute module since you can just flip some switches and connect a usb cable to the internal usb-c connector on the adapter to flash eMMC
