Just wondering, any thoughts on redesigning the backplate so that the panel above the computer module can be removed separate from the rest, allow for installing different cooling elements pretty easy, and allowing for a bit more customization without needing to re-do the entire backplate?

Its doable - some have tried their own variants like this one.
There is a lot to be said for the strength, thinness and heat dissipation of the current backplate, something that is hard to do with 3d printing. The CM5 upgrade demands better cooling, so it will be interesting to see how the community (and/or Clockwork) addresses this.
