uConsole Music Production

I was thinking to use this with a M8 headless, either with the M8C or the web version of the UI; and maybe to use another software tracker too… Does anyone run anything similar? The main concerns I have are that the module use a lot of power, so how feasible it is to be used just for the M8 UI?

And the second is related to the real time core needed by the OS for music applications… Did anyone made a specific distro for the uconsole that is aimed at audio production? Otherwise you will hear cracks and noises and delay when using any tracker or music app.

Would be great to have a small screen UI too from Renoise or Milky tracker, but I doubt that anyone would bother :frowning:

Okay I might need some hand holding here. :slight_smile:

When I fire up Renoise, I keep getting a message “failed to create a RealTime priority thread for ALSA. Will create a non RT thread instead.”
How do I install ALSA?
I tried the sudo apt-get install ALSA and it says “E: Unable to locate package alsa”

When I click on Sunvox and execute it, nothing happens. When I execute it from terminal it says “Failed to execute child process “xterm” (No such file or directory)” I’m on version 2.1C

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

With sunvox theres a few different ones you can try, i use the opengl one thats in the linux arm folder seems to work nicely for me, with renoise i cant help you because im using reaper atm, tbh i dont really have experience with both so might try renoise in the future

Yeah unfortunately I’ve tried opening all of the Sunvox executables and nothing happens, and I get the same error message when I try to execute them from the terminal- “Failed to execute child process “xterm” (No such file or directory)”

Thanks though!

I think this (right at the bottom) is what its talking about, theres also uxterm (also in photo) maybe you can install them. I dont know how i got mine, probably automatically installed with pi apps or pikiss or something installed from those programs.

Hello Astearon,

I’m a total noob and would like to see exactly what the installation process is to get Renoise to run at a reasonable screen size.
What kernel estc. did you use for it etc.?

Everyone, how is the sound quality?
Is it possible to connect a sound card directly to the USB-C port?

Thank you very much for your feedback

The usbc port is only for power unfortunately but there is a thing called a uhub that someone in this community has made that gives you 3 usbc ports (and an extra usb port internally with special ribbon cable) to replace the 4g board

There is only 1 kernel at the moment for the A06 version that I own.
Scaling was set to 1.2 and i think i set the executable to run as admin to be able to get over the sound crackling. There is a workaround the sound issue without running as admin but I can’t remember the process right now.
As for the install, renoise has a linux version of the app on their website so you can go grab that one directly.

@Astearon, thank you for coming back and answer.

Just got my uConsole today!
I’m a total Linux noob and have been trying to figure out how to install/run SunVox. I’ve been using it for years, but not on Linux.
So I’m just running the default Raspberry Pi os that came on the SD card and I went and downloaded SunVox version 2.0e (a more recent version doesn’t work right? Happy to stick with 2.0e for now…), extracted it to my Home folder.
I have tried running the raspberry pi SunVox executable by double clicking it, but nothing happens. I now need to try and do something from the command line, but I don’t understand how to formulate the command.
Please can anyone offer some advice to someone that doesn’t normally do command line Linux stuff?

To run a program as a command type “./” infront of whatever you want to run, also make sure you are in the right directory (folder) too either by using ls in terminal to list whats there and cd (change directory) followed by the folder you want to go into, or you can just open up the folder like on a normal computer and use f4 to open that folder in terminal
Also there are a few sunvox programs you can run when downloading the linux versions (they look grey with a little paper plane on them), i had my good luck with the lower spec ones but it runs perfectly fine on uconsole
Also if you have a problem with permissions anywhere you can try it again with “sudo” infront of it, sudo is your friend

I’ll be going through this soon myself, @timbient . I’m not a Linux noob.

Something you might want to start with is updating your system packages.

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get full-upgrade

Thanks for your reply. Just so you know, when you come to do this, when you run: sudo apt-get full-upgrade, after you restart the wifi has stopped working and the wifi icon has gone.
I’ll see if anyone else has posted about this issue.

Edit, this fixed it for me: Solution: Wifi not connecting after apt upgrade - #11 by jutleys

Also you might wonna check out reaper (DAW) and renoise (tracker) both great but both are in demo with a one time payment down the road.
Also i would recommend getting pi-apps, its a little free app store that installs things for you.

Sorry about that @timbient . I had the same issue, and should have mentioned it, but it was late and I needed to go to bed. Glad it all worked out for you though. I’m backing up my SD card using ApplePi-Baker now before I try to install SunVox.

No worries! My next thing to figure out is how to create a shortcut to open SunVox without having to use the terminal every time. I’m guessing that’s possible, but I’m not sure how to go about it.

Check out applications>preferences>main menu editor
Thats where you can add/remove anything in the applications menu, youll have to put in the command that you would use to run in terminal (might need to do a directory path like /home/pi(or whatever the user is called)/sunvox/…), get some customisation features too.

I downloaded the Sunvox ZIP file and extracted it under my home directory (~/bin). When I try to run the executable I get the error:

$ ./sunvox
./sunvox: /lib/aarch64-linux-gnu/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.33' not found (required by ./sunvox)

$ ldd --version
ldd (Debian GLIBC 2.31-13+rpt2+rpi1+deb11u8) 2.31

$ cat /etc/debian_version
11.9

i guess I’m running Debian Bullseye instead of Bookworm. I’ll update and try again.
