Before Replacing the Pico - READ THIS TO AVOID CRACKED SCREEN!

Before you replace the Pico in your PicoCalc, disconnect the FPC ribbon cable from the screen and remove the mainboard from the case. This was specified in another thread, but it can’t be stressed enough. Plugging a board into the Pico’s socket puts stress on the mainboard which then flexes enough to crack the screen. Another tip is to double check the alignment of the screen before screwing on the case back. If the screen doesn’t sit squarely in the opening, fastening the case back could cause the screen to crack. The screen isn’t particularly delicate, but position of other components can push it past its design limits.

Also if you accidently press the keyboard while screwing the case together the screen misaligned quite easily.

Just got my replacement screen and happy to report that mine is up and running again :smiling_face_with_sunglasses::+1:t2:

Ty to Alex for sending it.

Delivery was pretty fast to the UK. Sent 4 days ago and arrived today :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

And yes - don’t do what I did (before this thread raised the issue!)
I completely agree with the main post →
DC the ribbon cable so the screen doesn’t move.
Change Pico boards away from the case and screen and carefully check that it is seated properly before putting all back together again :man_facepalming:t2:

Basically, don’t put any pressure on the screen at all!

I think ive cracked mine. decided to try Fuzix out and the screen must have moved a little now i have what looks like a hairline crack down in the lower right hand corner and the screen looks like it has a bad case of the c64 jail bars. how / where did you order a replacement display from? i cant see anywhere on the clockworkpi site to order one.

@guu what about new forum achievement :joy:

Tip: tape down the screen to the front half of the case if you want, but DO NOT use any sort of hard glue (even hotglue)–case flex will put pressure on the screen and cause uneven backlight.

Thanks. I’ve emailed them, hopefully I’ll hear back soon.

I managed the same thing tonight, trying a Pico 2.
I now need to add ‘RTFF’, to the usual ‘RTFM’.
I’m not sure if it’s the cable or a crack in the screen backing, but I’ve got a corrupted stripe across the top of the screen.
I’ve emailed about a replacement,
Still amazed with how much I can get done on this little gem.

How long did it take for them to send you a replacement?

Paid for replacements on 21 Apr and still waiting.

Your serious? Looks like ill have it in October some time! I wish there was an alternative screen we could use. I’m already sick of the terminal and its janky shift backspace bs.

I suspect wait time might depend on where they are shipping to. I got my screen replacement (shipped to the US west coast) literally days before the tariff stuff really kicked off. I got tracking info via email on the 16th of April, and it arrived on May 1st. And the tracking info email arrived in less than a week from when I contacted Alex about getting the replacement screen. So all total it took less than a month. I’m not sure what the wait time is these days for US shipments, but they might be way worse than elsewhere?

April 21st seems extremely long though. You should probably contact Alex if you haven’t already.

Yeah I didn’t realise how long ago I placed the order. Think I got my uConsole quicker than these replacements.

I’m in the UK so I don’t think we’re subject to the current tariff wars, not that I’ve noticed anyway, just got my recent order from Aliexpress and that took less that 2 weeks with no extra taxes postage etc. I’m guessing (hoping) its a supply problem. I ordered a couple of items from Holland on 11 May and just got notification of shipping last weekend.

I know several of us have received messages from Alex indicating Clockwork was doing something to fix the screen problem, but didn’t know what that “something” was. This most recent post to discord from another user sounds like they changed the screen itself, somehow.

It will be interesting to see if they are using different screen hardware and if it’s 100% compatible with the old one in terms of software. Presumably that will be obvious if people start reporting their new devices aren’t working with existing firmware, or has other issues or benefits.

Alex replied, looks like I’m getting a spare as well  can’t wait to keep developing for this wonderful community!

Is the screen cracked by switching the pico or from opening and closing the case?

When I assembled mine, the screen fit snug and I was surprised that it would move and get cracked. It could not move from side to side or rotate, but I image it could lift.

I did add tape as suggested.

It can be cracked by flexing the board while either unplugging the old Pico or by plugging in the new one. It can also be cracked if it’s not sitting in just the right way when you screw the case shut. You can see if that’s the case (no pun!) by looking at the main board. If it doesn’t sit perfectly flush with the top half of the case, don’t put on the bottom half and screw it down!
