Iâve been checking in with Alex on shipping details once per month due to travel.
Was told August 21st there were two more batches before mine would be ready.
October 3rd I was told one more batch.
This week, November 9th I was told mine would be in the next batch.
Heâs been pretty responsive but the wait times on batches do not seem to be 3-5 per month as initially told.
So, basically one batch/month, thanks for the information, I will guess the next batch will be around the end of this month
Status for the current batch:
âPacking is almost done. Meanwhile, we are booking a shipping window. Shall be soon.â
SoâŚ
On 2024-10-15:
There will be about 3 more batches to go before yours.
I asked Alex to remove compute module, but keep GSM:
Your order will be in the next batch.
And also I got back 70$ and itâs kinda fair price.
seems like an ultimate shiphack. thanks everyone above for R&D!
Donât be too quick, I updated my order to remove the CM4 a couple months ago, still no shipping notice!
The refund amount is indeed a fair price for the 4gb CM4 module, I bought an 8GB version for mine (if it ever shows up) and an adapter for my Devterm to see if I can make it worth having (originally a06).
Good to hear that you modified your order and got it. I ordered in April and removed the cm4 last month and I was worried it put me back at the end of the line.
I think Iâll start emailing Alex every month just to find out how it went. I just contacted him at the start of november just to find out how many batches they shipped in October.
We shipped one in the past month, because we had to fix some issues on the metal parts. Good news is that we expect November to be a fast month because we have already prepared a storage of the parts.
To which I replied along the lines of âThis is unfortunate news, you guys are lucky to have such a dedicated and lovely community.â
I agree. To be honest, as a small company, we have so many barriers to struggle through for every batch. I am sincerely grateful.
Iâm sure you are Alex. It would help tremedously if we didnât have to literally pry the information out of you, but until I receive my shipment notice, I might as well keep prying.
I hate to bug them, every email they have to answer is another shipment that doesnât get packed and sent. I wish there was a tracker we could use for self service to figure out where we are. Could have used it today to track down what turned out to be a failing network switch with partial and slow throughput, had to drag my laptop out for testing which isnât really a great choice in this specific circumstance. I had hoped the Devterm would fill this function, but just too many things get in my way.
I do mail him every month since the 90 bussines days passed, I am collecting his answer as a kid collecting play cards. Until now I got the âfour more batches before your orderâ, a âtwo more batches beofre yoursâ a rare âitâs been a slow month but we are reciving a batch of metal parts so we will be shiping in no timeâ. I also got the classic âwe are working in 3-5 batches per monthâ. When I asked if that means they send my unit in september Alex told me a âmost likely in octoberâ and At the end of october I asked about recieving in this month for my birthday he said âyes most likelyâ. Two more weeks to mail him again unless the last answer be the good one, but watching not a single shipping notice published in the forums burn away that hope. I would be mad if I recibe another âtwo more batchesâ notice since they havenât sended any new batch.
I just found out that I could get better variant of CM4 than the one that ships with uconsole - by default you get one with 4GB RAM, however I can get my hands on model with 8GB RAM and 32GB eMMC builtin. So I messaged Alex asking if I could modify my order to non-core option. Weâll see if itâll speed things up or not.
I think you will need to build your own OS for the emmc board or find a way to start from sd card.
Definitely worth reading posts about using emmc on the forums. While it might give a slight speed increase, you wonât be able to use the sd card slot at all, and youâll need extra hardware to flash your CM4, as well as need to disassemble the uConsole and remove the CM4 every time you want to flash a new image. Personally, I think itâs a lot of hassle for a (maybe) minor improvement in speed, and while the emmc might survive more read/write cycles than an SD card, SD cards are easy and cheap to replace while entire CM4s are not.
The 8GB CM4 is nice though. I got one without emmc and have been quite happy with it. The entire 8GB might be more than Iâll ever need, but having more than 4GB can be useful.
Oh! Thanks for the tip! I didnât know that flashing eMMC would require some extra work on my end. I thought it would be more along the lines of how for example SSD drive acts on my regular pi where it would boot up from the SD card and the eMMC would act as regular storage partition to which I could copy the SD Card over.
So we went from There will be 4 more batches before yours
to Your order will be in the next batch
simply by removing the CM4 core from the order. So now Iâm waiting for my bank to process the refund so I can get the CM4 module from vendor in my country. This leads me to believe that the main bottleneck is availibility of CM4 cores in wherever it is Clocwork is building their uconsole units. Itâs unfortunate that theyâre losing money that way but if you do have the possibility, youâre better off just getting the non-core version and getting the core somewhere else.
Every time sometime talk about the mail i think of the movie snatch :
Whatâs happening with them sausages, Charlie?
Five minutes, Turkish.
It was two minutes five minutes ago.
