Update: uConsole shipping related

Judging by the price we paid and the complexity of the uConsole I would be amazed if CPI are making any profit. This product may be re-using some revised designs from the DevTerm to save some cash, but just the change from quick and cheap to produce plastic cases to cast Mg-Al alloy cases alone would add way more cost and production time. Add to that the development and production of a completely new 4G module and the increase in component cost caused by the supply shortage and they may well be losing money on the uConsole at the current price.

I seriously suspect that Alex and some of the other CPI people don’t even take a salary and are doing this on top of their normal jobs just to bring their dream projects to market.

It’s not actually that complicated of a system. The 4G module is for the most part off the shelf, the pcie connector is just blatantly repurposed, and the breakout board is also pretty minimal and follows normal CM3 breakout board guidelines. Hell, if you want to get a different CM4 shim, it should still work even. I know where to get or how to manufacture everything that they did, except for the screen. I have no idea where they sourced the screen. I wouldn’t be surprised still though if it comes out to like, maybe, 5% or less profit from each sale. There is more profit from using the ClockworkPi processor boards rather than the CM4, but the PCBs are stupid cheap, the machining and molding is done as a service, and all of the parts are replaceable or sourcable (still can’t find the screen).

What? I mean get a refund if you want, but not only is “… de facto monopoly on handheld general purpose computers…” one of the dumbest things I’ve heard on here, “… (you can’t use an iPhone for programming) …” is also provably false. There are plenty of environment available for iOS and iPadOS, you just can’t package an application on device last time I checked. Hell, I got a CPE degree doing a majority of my work on an iPad with an RPi4 using its USB-C connection as an OTG network port for SSH and VNC. The overall profit margin on the device from the parts is very low, but it’s like 5-10% probably. It’s still profitable, but I highly doubt this is what they are doing full time. This is an overtly simply device using a lot of COTS components.

If you want some other options after your potential refund, here. The steam deck is also very capable and close to the same price after you get everything you need.

195XX here, hopefully my order is included in the second batch. I didn’t expect my newborn daughter to come out before the uConsole lol

Awesome, excited to see more batches going out!

For Ipad I would recommend to try the Ish and A-shell, could be a solution if you would like to use it as a terminal

Those are tablets and congrats for your CPE. That’s an apprenticeship in something else than programming though, so you might probably not know. Have fun installing an OS of your choice, using Git, writing code, testing etc. on those.
I hope you understand that you cannot install an e.g. Haskell or Erlang environment plus Git etc. on an iDevice, do you? Even on a Linux tablet you have the choice between a pretty locked-in Android and a lot of work to make a generic Linux useable with on-screen keyboard etc.
There are no other handheld general purpose computers with a keyboard out there, except probably the beepberry and the long gone C.H.I.P. pocket. So unfortunately yes, it’s a monopoly.
P.S. no one here needs the money back, it’s a rich boy’s hobby. Or are you in dire need of the 100$ or so to buy food? Please stop insisting on “take your refund and go”, it’s not what people are here for.

I’ve had hospital results I’ve been less tense about receiving than the shipping email. If I died today I’d 100% be haunting the earth, endlessly waiting for my uConsole.

iOS can do it with help is what I was trying to get at. iPad OS and iOS hadn’t forked yet at that time and I have both. You can install those programs or use web equivalents, you just can’t package an application (as I said prior). Because of how iOS’s and iPadOS’s packaging pipeline has really tight security on binary compilation, it won’t be native performance but both of those devices are an interface specifically designed to avoid the complexities of being a handheld computer. It just happens to be possible. And for my androids, on a recent os, I literally chrooted a debian environment for gimp. I cannot fathom what you are talking about for android limitations other than maybe the default package managers being lackluster.

Weird pivot to another way to say that I must be poor, but I sent you a google search because you a probably either too stupid or lazy to search for another solution so instead you are just here complaining. If you really are playing a “rich boy’s hobby” go purchase a GPD device, install linux, and just shut up already. The serial port on some of their devices is more accessible than the GPIO on clockwork devices. And if you are just projecting poorness, try out the relatively more cost effective pinephone devices first with a fold out keyboard and touchscreen that in practice have had their touchscreens converted to a multi-touch trackpad (I have one of them too).

I was using blink last time that I was doing that, but I will have to check those out. Have you found any good mosh implementations for the iPad yet? I found a half-okay one, but wouldn’t recommend it.

Ish has Alpine environment, you can directly add mosh in it

Mine is 196xx

Does anyone know what was the last order number sent?

If there is an official forecast?

If it affects the country of destination whether it is shipped later or earlier?

Order No. 19276 was listed as shipped in another forum post. one of the guys there said that it looked like mainland china was getting shipped. can get anything official from anyone at clockwork that i’ve seen even so far as how many are in a batch. just a little blurb every month or three about “getting ready”. worst communication of any company i’ve ever dealt with. seems they shipped more of the CM4 models without the adapter again.

Come on man, you can always ask for a refund(1). Be patient, we all know that this is a small company and they are not after the profits(2). Given their stellar track record, we are sure they will deliver and you will be happy with the product(3).

(1) you can always ask.
(2) but are custodians of a nice sum from the prepaid orders. For sure they don’t spend it, for sure they paid no salaries during the last year when they delivered mostly nothing.
(3) without the adapter, could use as doorstepper. Cheap doorstepper.

This helps no-one. They’re getting deliveries out as fast as possible, which in the current global circumstances is a freaking miracle, and tracking emails for the next batch are supposed to be out in the next few days. Whinging about them doesn’t make anything better, it just makes the wait more unpleasant.

even a small company could update the shipping forum every week or so with a proof of life post. i realize they’re shipping product but there’s only so many “covid supply chain” and “its a small team” posts one can put up with. i’ve already waited 10 months on a “90 days to ship” product, no reason to request a refund at this point. i wouldn’t want to pull the 1 person that seems to be producing these away and delaying everyone else’s orders even more.

I’m sure they can spare a few minutes to refund you if it spares the rest of us months of continuous whining. You should just ask.

Can you explain what you mean by this statement? The opening post in this topic is updated 2-3 times per month with new information since May. Hell, it was just updated 4 days ago and thats the second update this month already.

You pre-ordered a pre-production product. Nowhere does it state that the item will ship in 90 days. Nor does anything say that you will get your item in 90 days from the day you order it.

The store page states this:

Shipping information

  • Express service

  • Based on the current supply chain and logistics situation, the estimated delivery time is approximately 90 business days.

This says DELIVERY can take as long as 90 days from the day that it is shipped due to global supply chain and logistics issues. Nowhere does it state an estimate for the time it will take to BE shipped.

I simply answered a question from another forum user with information that I was able to find not from clockwork but from other forum users who have been able to science out what’s going on with shipping and added that communication is terrible from this company. They’ve not advised a number of items in a batch nor what model is being shipped nor to where. Items have been shipped a second time missing a part that they will not work without adding even more wait time to those buyers. You all are the ones that then decided to light it up with the “global supply chain” and “request a refund” and “don’t be a whiner” posts. I know that they’re shipping stuff eventually and to estimate 90 days when you know that’s never been true with any other product you’ve shipped is a little misleading. So if you don’t mind I’d appreciate if you’d just hop up off my a$$ about it unless you’re a clockwork employee with a shipping update.

Reads like they’re saying they’ll ship and be delivered in about 90 days to me.
